Farmer's Market Pros and Cons

I have recently set a goal of trying to make it out of the house in the morning and then staying home in the afternoon. My hope is that this helps with Marley's schedule... she's a bit of a monster when it comes to sleeping. So this morning we were up and out at 9am!!!! We have a local mid-week farmer's market, which is super nice because it gives us something to do during the week. So I strapped Penny into the Ergo (best baby purchase!) and placed Marley in the stroller (mistake #1) and off we went!

If you know Marley, then you know that 1. She doesn't sit still AT ALLL. 2. She LOVES food. So this resulted in 1 fall and several escapes to attack the samples. Then I felt bad that my toddler was eating all the food and guilted myself into purchasing from more than I would have liked to. What started as a free fun outing ended up costing me more than the produce at the store would have :(
That being said, I am a huge supported of buying locally, so I guess that wasn't so bad.
This was my first "issue."

The second thing that bothered me was the craft vendors. Most of the vendors there were selling pre-fabricated merchandise. Stuff that was bought in bulk and shipped from China. This is not handmade! It made me sad that one of the places where handmade has thrived is being taken over by this type of industry! A tear was shed for the handmade community today... not literally, but figuratively...

Overall I would give the Farmer's Market experience a 7... Its more fun when I have back-up :)

Just a few announcements!
1. I have a new website! Check it out and let me know what you think! I have to make some decisions about making the official switch to the new one soon.

2. Little Bird and Babies in Green now has a facebook page! I will be holding a giveaway once I reach 50 likes, so like me :)
3. Right now I am putting together an super fun baby shower for my Sister-in-Law, who is due with her first baby boy in May. I will have all sorts of great pictures and tutorials once all is said and done :)

GAPS and Eating Clean

I thought that I would start to share something that has become a HUGE part of our life. I have always been on the bandwagon of eating healthy, and organic ( when possible), but about a year ago we made some drastic changes in the diet of my daughter Ava. Since then I have learned alot in terms of diet and how it effects the body. Each week I want to share some of what I have learned, and how we implement it at home.
To start I want to share the book (reccomended by our nutritionist):
Gut and Psychology Syndrome

This book makes some amazing points about how the body processes food, and how this in turn effects us. Based on this book and guided by a wonderful nutritionist we eliminated:
gluten
grains (except brown rice)
milk
sugar
casein
all additives, preservatives, and artificial anything

we basically moved into a whole foods diet with limitations... and thus began my journey to figure out what the heck I feed my kid!

Penelope Rosettes

Yes, named after our recent addition! I am in love with these fun accessories right now. My sister-in-law, Nicole, started me on this craze and I am hooked! I wear them everywhere.
So when Nicole came in town a couple of weeks ago we went to town making our own, and Ta Da!!!!

These are the first of many new additions to the shop, many of which will be rosettes! Seriously they are so pretty, and best of all you can share them with your little girls. I have quickly found that the best accessories are the ones that serve multiple purposes! These are on alligator clips, so they can be headbands, hair clips, shoe clips...

Oh, and did you see the new header!!! More on that soon!

New Year... New Baby... New Products...

We are finally home and getting settled with our family of five! Crazy!!!!
So I though I would share some of the exciting things we have planned for this new year.

1. I shared with you some pictures that Chris from Chris Nelson Photography took of Penny. Which turned our AMAZING!!!! She will be working with me next month to do a photo shoot of some of my products!!! Wooo hooo! Its about time I get good pictures done!!!! As much as I would love to think of myself as a decent photographer, I just can't compare to someone as talented as her!

2. I have some new crochet products coming out! Including hats, plus newborn photography props!!!!

3. Soon to be seen ( they are already made and will soon be photographed!) are the creme de la creme of hair accessories! Rossettes made with silk and embellished with swarovski crystals. These are perfect for a little princess or her momma!

Penelope Ruth

We were blessed with the arrival of baby girl #3, Penelope Ruth, on December 28th at 1:05 am!
She weighed 7 lbs, and was 20 1/2 ".

It has been so wonderful to spend time treasuring our new addition!

We were lucky enough to get a newborn photo sessions with Chris from Chris Nelson Photography. I can't say enough great things about her! She did an amazing job, and I can't wait to see all of the pictures she took!!!

I am done with all my holiday season shows! It has been so much fun, and I have enjoyed seeing all the wonderful vendors and shoppers who are out there buying handmade (woohooo!)
I must admit though, I am tired! Being 8 months pregnant might have something to do with it, but it sure
has been a whirlwind!

This is my wrap-up post, since i have been absent from the blogging world!
1. The Queen Bee Market was AMAZING!!!! I can't say enough good things about it! It was an event, and all the vendors, and the lovely Mique and Jessica, brought their best to the table. The booths were unbelievable, and the turnout was fantastic! I, of course, forgot my camera. So I don't have pictures to share... but you can catch some great ones here :

2. My best sellers:
It's always fun to see what sells best, and had I known, I would have made more :)
I need to get better about narrowing down my inventory to certain items, rather than trying to make everything!!!! One day....
So, that being said, my hats were a HUGE success!!!

In second place were the hair clips and headbands, as usual.... and the owls especially!
and a close third were the Boy Bow Ties!

3. Hats! So I know I have already done a little post on these guys, but I am touching base one more time!

So yes, its a bummer my good machine is having some difficulties.... but as a result, I have had a chance to work on these!
Super cute! The newsboy/girl hats will be available in sizes nb-5 yrs, and is some great colors!

Wonder why I haven't been posting.... I've been too busy prepping! I promise it's worth it! I have some super fun stuff ready for the upcoming QBM!

Upcoming....

So this is the time of year when things get a bit busy! If you have kids, then it's time to start thinking Halloween Costumes (possible a tutu?), then it's Thanksgiving, and before you know it.... Christmas! Yes, I said it, and really it is almost here!!!!!

So heres what is in store for me in the upcoming months:

I am lucky enough to be doing this for the second time, and am so excited for what they have in store for us!!!! Seriously, its the best of the best, and you are supporting the handmade community... many of which are SAHMs!

Also, I will be returning to my old Elementary School (Westwood Elementary) in Rancho Bernardo to be a vendor at a Holiday Boutique they are holding as a PTA fundraiser. If you are local you should drop by and check this one out as well! Novermber 5th during school hours.

Ruffled Bloomers

Yea! Finally finished with the first of my new line of Ruffled Bloomers! See... I said there would be some new stuff coming soon!

These are the most indulgent pair of bloomers ever! As if little girls aren't cute enough, put a pair of these on them, and they are beyond adorable. Marley actually prances when she wears hers! Its as if she knows how cute she is!

Ava's Alice Party

My oldest, Ava, turned five in August and per her request we had a Alice in Wonderland party for her. I didn't go over the top since we only had a small group, but it was the perfect party for her!

I was proud of the cake. It didn't turn out anywhere near perfect, but it was my first try and using fondant (actually home-made marshmallow fondant) on a large scale, and I thought it turned out pretty well! I will post more on this soon with recipes and tips.

Ava begged for an Alice dress, so I attempted to make one. I didn't get the apron part done, but the base dress was finished, and she seemed pleased enough with that. She picked out the fabric, a sparkly blue satin, not exactly 100% Alice, but definitely Ava! I have to say, the fabric was super annoying to sew with since it frays easily, but it all came together!

I bought some tea cups from World Market and tied them with little "drink me" tags that I made off the computer. I simply typed up the phrase and put it in a cute font, then printed on card stock and punched them out with a 2" scallop punch (a necessity if you don;t have one yet!) I then used a hole punch to create a place for the ribbon and tied them on using pink and blue ribbon, my new favorite color combo!

I had an assortment of tea pots gathered from me and my Mom and decorated them with the same tags.

I'll post a few more pictures tomorrow with some more details and a tutorial!!!

Also, some super cute creations for the upcoming market. I've kicked back in to creation and production mode and am SUPER excited about some new items I will be adding!

Flower Girl Birdcage Veils

Flower Girl Birdcage Veils

My Sister-in-Law recently got married and asked me if it would be possible to make birdcage veils for the flower girls (one of which was my daughter Ava.) I said "of course!" So after a few google searches and blog raids I came up with some options. Needless to say, as I feel this applies to most tutorials, I added my own spin, and Ta Da!

Here are a few tutorials:

Hip Hostess: How to Make a Birdcage Veil

Made By Mary Ann: Birdcage Veils, and How To Make One (Part 2)! How To Make A Birdcage Veil!

I found that for the little girls, the top corners definitely need to be cut to reduce the amount of gathering. I attached mine to some clear hair combs that I wrapped in satin ribbon to match the netting.

Once finished I made some flowers from ivory organza and the same netting.

Materials:

organza (always use a synthetic material)

netting or tulle

matching thread

sewing needle

match or lighter

1. cut circles out of the netting and organza

2. singe the edges of the organza just enough to melt them and not burn them. This is a fine line and may take a little practice.

3. Layer the organza circles and netting to create the fullness and look you want.

4. start by sewing up through the center of all your layers then back through and knotting for security.

5. I then like to pinch my layers and sew through them to give a more flower-like look.

Once you have finished you can attach the flowers by sewing them onto the ribbon-wrapped portion of the comb.

Didn't they turn out darling! I was proud!!

Ivette's "Bride to Bee" Bridal Shower

Today I thought I would highlight my Sister-in-Law's Shower that I co-hosted with the other Maid of Honor. We had so much fun working on this shower! The theme for the shower was "Bride to Bee" and the colors were all done in yellow and black.

Ashley, the other Maid of Honor (yes both of us are Ashley!),
made this amazing banner from scrapbook paper.

Lemonade, iced tea, and Sangria.

Everything was pulled together using a scheme of black and white damask and yellow accents. In addition we took the theme literally and added bee stamps to match the invitations. (featured previously)

Here we displayed pictures of the Bride and Groom. We also had a place set-up here for the guests to enter a drawing if they brought an additional kitchen gadget as a gift.

I made the cupcakes and topped them off with cupcake toppers
and stamped with a bee to match the theme.

Apple Bliss

Here it is, the big announcement! My sister-in-Law Ivette and I are starting a little business called Apple Bliss! We will be making indulgently coated caramel apples for events and gifts.
Here's the story...
Ivette was just married on July 2nd to her husband Brandon. Brandon's aunt offered to help teach us how to make these amazing chocolate covered caramel apples ( think RM chocolate Factory style) as favors for the wedding. So we learned, she helped us make them for the wedding... and everyone raved! Since she has no interest in turning this into a business... we are!!!

Here's a picture of the ones we made for Ivette's wedding. This a Toffee Apple (Caramel apple, dipped in milk chocolate, rolled in Heath bar, and drizzled with white chocolate!!!)

Not to toot my own horn, but these are seriously amazing! Hence the name, Apple Bliss. Plus we do them up all pretty to match the occasion. So, if you know anyone in the market for favors, or gifts... send them our way!

I'm sorry I don't have pictures to share today... I've been out of town a few days... but I do have some info to spark your interest. Next week I will be showing off the dress i made (am currently making) Ava for her Alice in Wonderland birthday party!!!! It's sparkly, and blue, and sweet. Everything an Alice dress should be plus some.
Also, I have a new business venture that my Sister - in- Law are starting!!! I am so excited to share this, and hopefully we will have enough details nailed out for me to debut it next week!

Plus, I made some pretty cute burp cloths this weekend for an order I received. Pictures of those to come as well!!

Back From Summer "Vacation"

I apologize for my long absence, but I took a much needed "vacation" from blogging and sewing. I am back now, refreshed and ready to roll! The good news is, I did not stop creating, and have plenty of pictures to share!
I am also thrilled to announce that we are expecting our third baby girl, Penelope Ruth, due January 7th! This was the main reason for my absence, due to morning sickness and the joys of early pregnancy! Now I am almost 16 weeks and have passed the hard part... for now.

Here's what the next moth should hold in store for my blogging adventures:
War on Ants!- Yes, we have an ant problem. If you live in California you have an ant problem... the key is figuring out how to deal with them naturally.... and successfully.

Returned!

I have returned! I promise never to leave for that long again... barring emergency of course! I've had a crazy couple of weeks and blogging has taken a back seat. First the long awaited Queen Bee Market was a huge success! The set-up was amazing, and so many people came out to support all of the amazing vendors. There's talk of a Fall one, so if you missed this one, you have to check out the next one. I seriously could have bought every item there! It was definitely my most profitable craft event I have done, and I have a good idea now of what people are looking for. The Stella outfit was a hit, along with my new skirt pattern that I forgot to take a picture of!!!!! (tragic!) All in all I was thrilled, and am now moving on to my next goal of trying to get into some local boutiques.... any suggestions?

Next was my Sister-in-Law's Bridal Shower. I will be posting on this soon, but I will give you a little sneak peek! It was wonderful! She looked beautiful, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Up next is Marley's First Birthday in about two weeks, so soon you will see all my preparations for that. At least my absence is yielding fruit... it wasn't all for nothing!

Also... I will have a whole series on building our yard... and my GARDEN whooo hoo!!!!!

Finished Friday Extended!

Didn't quite make it yesterday to showing off my latest finish project, so I will show off today! I really wanted to share my newest baby skirt design, which desperately needs a name (hint hint... HELP!) but I have lost my camera battery charger... typical. I also spent several hours last night making tutus for The Queen Bee Market! Those pictures will have to wait until I find the charger as well.So today I will share a felt banner I recently made as a special order off etsy. This customer wanted a 50 foot banner to decorate her patio for her son's first birthday, and a mini matching banner for his high chair! (how cute is that!) She chose dark blue, light blue, and orange. I really loved the way the colors came together. The orange and light blue combo is my favourite.

I'm thinking of making this the tutorial for Tuesday... what do you think?

Bride to "Bee" Shower! Part 1

So I missed my "Party Wednesdays"! I'm trying to keep up with the schedule... but I know it will take a few weeks, so hang in there with me! I have so much to share in the party realm. Right now I am planning my Sister-in-Law's Bridals Shower, and Marley's First Birthday, both in May! Today I will share the invites for the Bridal Shower. Again, in case you didn't know... I'm a bit obsessed with themes! I need them, they guide all of my party planning... I LOVE them... maybe a bit too much.
So I pondered over the theme for this shower for some time. I wanted it to be be special... and chic... and fun... and her favorite color is yellow, so I came across these at The Tomkat Studio:

And thought to myself.... that would be cute for a shower! So, inspired, I ran it by my wonderful co-host... and the theme was created... now on to the invites!

my co-host came up with some amazing inspiration boards with black and white damask and yellow accents, which totally give a chic look. I used that to guide the invites. A trip to Paper Source, a trip to Michaels, hours of stamping embossing, printing, gluing, and addressing. The invites are done! Ta Da!

Make your own cleaners!

So today I will share a few DIY cleaners that I have found for around the home. If you know me, you know I HATE chemicals. They creep me out! And to top it off, I have incredibly sensitive skin and without fail, I always react badly to cleaners... so I try and use as many natural cleaners as possible around my home.

Here's what I use:

Windows: Vinegar and water... yes, it works! Vinegar is AMAZING... I knew this, but then I found this , 1001 ways to use Vinegar!

Check out that page for so many ideas for non- chemical ways to get the job done!

Anti-Bacterial Cleaner: Tea Tree Oil and Water (fill up a spray bottle with water and add a couple of drops of Tea Tree Oil)

Floors: I mix Castille Peppermint Soap with water and scrub away. This one is particularly important to me because I have a little one crawling around on the floors... picking things up off the floors... and yes, sometimes even licking the floors! Despite how much this utterly grosses me out, at least I know she is not licking chemicals along with the dirt and left over chicken nugget crumbs. The Castille Soap is just Trader Joe's version of Dr. Bonners... which is another one of those Miracle cleaners.... you can use it for anything, and it smells great!

I Haven't had much success with natural dishwasher detergents, but I just read this post on a wonderful blog I check in on sometimes, and I will have to give it a try... I'll let you know how that one goes!

As for laundry detergent, I use Crunchy Clean... which I am now carrying!!! Whoo hooo! This is a work at home mom, making NATURAL detergent from her kitchen, and she has the yummiest scents to choose from... check out her website... I Love her stuff!

Try these out... ditch those harsh chemicals and enter the world of green living... wouldn't it be nice to know that if your kiddo were to enter the forbidden cleaner cabinet... it wouldn't kill them... they might just smell like Vinegar, Tea Tree Oil, and Peppermint... just a thought!

Let's Get Organized!

Not you... Me... and well, I need to get organized in more ways than I care to share, but I'm specifically talking blog wise. Up until now this blog has been a place for me to post my projects and occasionally spout off on a tangent regarding my thoughts on life, mommyhood, and the green factor that I desperately try and include in my lifestyle. While I have no problem with randomness, I am finding that I wish I was sharing a little more info on green living, and tips and tricks that help save money while keeping nasty chemicals far away from your family. I also wish that I had a set time to share my party ideas, that I love so much! So my goal...

I used white, pink and purple tulle, and I loved how the colors came out!

Stella Skirt and Baby Tutu

As promised I have pictures of the Stella Skirt and the Baby Tutu on my favorite model (I'm not partial at all :))!

This "photo shoot" lasted all of about 5 mins! Marley was not having it. Have I mentioned she HATES grass! How weird is that! Its nice when we walk to the park and I can lay out a blanket, and she wont budge off it, so I get a little bit of non-chasing time. On the other hand, Its hard to get good pictures outside! Notice her foot is as close to her body as possible. She was so irritated with me!

I love the poofieness (not sure if thats a real word... clearly being an English major did not help me in the spelling department) of this tutu!
I thought the Stella Skirt turned out really cute on. I really dislike long skirts on babies, they always seem to overwhelm them. I like that this one is short and sassy, and doesn't take over my little peanut!

I just made a 1st birthday tutu for some friends today, so I will share that creation next week!

Busy Busy Busy!

No I have not abandoned blogging!
I am busy busy working on several projects right now!!! So there's some fun posts to come! Heres my Project list as a little preview of the great ideas I'll be sharing soon! ( I promise!)

1. 50ft! (yes 50 feet!!!) felt banner. I got an order for this on my etsy shop and am hard at work completeing it. She chose light blue, dark blue and orange for the colors, and I have to say I love how they look together. I am very excited about seeing this one completed! It will also have a matching mini banner for around the highchair!

2. My Sister-in-Law and Best Friend is getting married this summer and I am co-hosting a shower for her in May. If you know me, you know that I am kind of obsessed with showers and themes. So I'm having a blast with this one. I'm in the invitation stage right now, so when those are mailed off you will get the first peek at this shower. But, for now I'll leave you with my color scheme... Yellow, black, and white.

3. A new skirt design! Whoo hooo!!! I have a vision that I'm hoping will play out fabulously! It involves more tulle ruffles! I need a chic girls name.... any ideas?

A Little Peek at Some Fun Skirts!

Just a little peek at what I'm working on for The Queen Bee Market!
I'm going to try and take some more pictures this weekend on my own little model, but I thought I would share the solo pics today!

I call this the Stella Skirt. I'm kind of obsessed with this one. I love the tulle at the bottom... its so whimsical and girly! I made one a couple of weeks back for a baby shower for little Stella... hence the name! This will soon have a matching onesie and hair clip of course!

This is a double-layered baby tutu! Ok, so I'm on a tulle kick! I've been making tutus for awhile now, and wanted to mix it up a little so I made this one multi-layered. It turned out so poofy! Mission accomplished! I think thats the goal of every tutu... how poofy can one be!

Flower Headband and Fun Kiddo Pictures!

I'm lucky enough to live in Southern California and we have been experiencing amazing weather lately! We are talking like 80 degrees! I know... I'm spoiled! One of the things I love about this weather is it makes for great pictures! I thought I would share some pic of my kiddos today, and show off Marley's new headband.

Heres Ava sporting her Kaiya Eve skirt! My Mom got this one for her, and I adore it! I know Martha Stewart had a tutorial for it, but I can't find it!!!

The Queen Bee Market and Flower Clips

I am so excited to announce that I will be one of the many vendors at the Queen Bee Market in Carlsbad CA on May 1st! Felt Hair Clippies

Sorry I've been absent for a few days! Things have been a bit busy! My cousin got married this weekend, so we had a fun and family filled weekend of wedding preparation and visiting, not to mention carting the kids around from place to place :)The wedding turned out beautiful, and I enjoyed a day sans kiddos! Now we are back into the swing of things. I had planned on sharing a little Easter craft I put together on Friday, but I have yet to take the pictures, so I'm puling a craft from the archives!
If you have a little girl, or know someone who does, this is a great project to spice up their wardrobe.

Materials:
Felt: I buy mine by the yard at JoAnn's, since I make these for my shop. You could also buy just the squares.Snappi Clips: Found at beauty supply shops
Thread: regular thread works, thats what I used in the pictures, but embroidery thread is even better!
Needle
Beads if wanted

1. Cut two rectangles out of your felt. I hold the clip up to the felt and make sure I have adequate room around it for my design and stitching around the clip.
2. Cut out your decor for the top, and stitch it on! Stitching rather than gluing will give it better longevity.3. Take your back piece of felt and cut a slit in it for the bottom part of the Snappi to go through (see the picture!)4. Place the two pieces of felt around the clip with the bottom part of the clip coming through the slit and stitch around the edges.

Voila! You are done!

Look Who's Coming! Baby Shower Gift

Finally! I tracked down a picture of the baby shower gift I made and sent off on Saturday! I knew someone would have taken a photo, and good ol facebook pulled through!

The theme of the party was birds, and the invitation read "Look Whooo's Coming" with owls on it, so since I LOVE owls, this was my inspiration!

I wish you could see the skirt better, hopefully I'll find another photo, and when I do, a tutorial will be coming... or maybe I'll make another one just for that purpose (and Marley's wardrobe :) )

The Owl is appliqued on the onesie, using my own owl pattern. I stitched the wings on with a zigzag stitch, and then did a straight stitch around the edge prior to applying the strong Heat and Bond (which you Can't sew through). The eyes were attached using Heat and Bond as well. This way there is no stitching touching the baby skin, especially since I made this for 0-3 months.

The skirt is my own creation with a fun double-layered tulle ruffle at the bottom. (these will be in my shop soon!)

Throw in pair of Baby Legs, and you have an outfit!

I can't believe its been a week since I've posted!!! Well, if your looking for a good excuse, this time I have one! My family has been passing around this horrendous cold, and last in line was me! So I've been "out sick." I'm on the med now, and so hopefully will have some fun things to share this week. I has planned on showing a baby shower gift I made, but made the stupid mistake (probably caused by my zombie -like state due to the cold) of sending it off without taking pictures!!!! So, one day, hopefully soon, I will acquire some pics and post that!
I do want to say a quick thank you to Summer at Sumo's Sweet Stuff for featuring my pillowcase dress on her blog! I was so excited!!! If you haven't checked out her blog it's a definite must. She has some great tutorials and inspiring projects!

Now on to my craft goals for the month!:

1. Easter Tree

I have been wanting one of these for awhile. My Mom had one when I was growing up and I always loved it. So I was scoping out Pottery Barn Kids the other day (looking for inspiration and such) and I found this!!! Then I saw the price! So my goal is to make one... before Easter!

2. Bridal Shower Invites. My Sister-in-Law is getting married in July (yea!) and I have her bridal shower beginning of May, so... time for invites (quite possibly my favorite part!)

So, although nothing fun today, a glimpse of fun to come!

7 am, Marley is up for good ( she has been up 5 times since I put her to bed at 8:30)
7:15, I get hushed by Ava, who has been in my bed since about 4 am... "shh mom, be quiet.... I'm sleeping!"
7:30, rush to make my dish for MOPS (yes, I procrastinate) Monkey Bread by the Pioneer Woman (amazing!)
get kids dressed... throw myself together..
8:30 ( I have to leave in 15 min), take MB out of oven
8:45 (time to go), pour MB out and realized its not cooked !!! AHHHHHH throw it back in the oven
I leave my house 15 mins late carrying a bunt cake pan with oven mitts .... walk into MOPS with oven mitts! Yes, it just came out of the oven!
LOVE MOPS, 21/2 hrs of no kids :)
11:30, Ava throws a temper tantrum in the hallway leaving MOPS... yep, thats my kid screaming... no, not sure why
12:00, lunch for Ava
12:30, wipe poop off the bathroom wall, she's 4 1/2... those poor Kindergarten teachers... they don't know what they have coming
12:45, Marley and I cuddle and I attempt to watch part of The Bachelor
1:30, Ava comes down stairs stating that she has "taken a short but good nap"... I retort, she asks for "options"
2:00, clearly nap time is not happening
2:30, Marley is playing quietly, and then I discover that she has a glass heart (marble sized in her mouth), I knew it was too good to be true!
2:45, realized that the reason my baby monitor won't charge is because our new dog has chewed through the cord! joey!!!!!
4:00, I realized that I didn't put on the mascara that I had planned to put on in the car this morning :(

and the day goes on...

You don't get a full day, only half, maybe I will follow up tomorrow with the rest! Wish me peace :) ( I Love my life!)

Fit for a Birthday!

So here's the project that kept me busy last week ( hence the lack of posting!). I was asked to make a custom dress and banner for a first birthday party! I was able to snag a couple photos of the finished products before they were picked up, but it was late and they were taken indoors, so the quality isn't great, but hopefully I will have better pictures soon.
Isn't the fabric for the dress amazing! I fell in love with the fabric, I mean, who doesn't love Amy Butlers fabric anyways, and pictures never do it justice! It came in the mail, and I DIED!

Here's a little peek at the owl I appliqued on the bottom, per request. The ribbon is a little in the way, but you can still get the gist.

Now Part 2! The Banner! This turned out to be a bigger endeavour than I predicted, but I was super happy with the outcome!

I made the banner from craft felt. It has three layers, the back triangle, the front triangle and the letters. Each triangle is about 81/2" by 81/2". The smaller one is about 1/2" less... maybe a bit more. The middle circle between the words is done in fabric that matched the dress, and attached by velcro. It can be replaced with a plain red circle, or really anything made from felt! This way it can be made to fit the party, since it will be reused. The triangles are strung together using quilter's bias tape. I will be adding these to my etsy shop shortly for custom orders if you don't feel up to making your own! Also, the dresses are available for custom orders as usual, by e-mail me your requests!

Kristina's Alphabet Shower

I had so much fun putting together a bridal shower for my cousin's fiance Kristina. They are getting married in March here in southern California! I based the shower off Martha Stewart's Alphabet theme, which stood out as unique and fun. Let me just say I LOVE themes. I have to have a theme attached to every party I do. It helps guide me. I am one of those people who falls in love with so many cute things, and if I don't have some guidelines, things can get a bit carried away. Themes are my guidelines!

I just wanted to show off a couple of pictures and share some of the ways we used the alphabet theme.
I was lucky enough to use my mom's beautiful home, as well as her help in the decorating process! We chose a green and purple color scheme, and my mom made the amazing flower arrangements. You can find pictures and a tutorial for the favors, appliqued dishtowels, on my post from Monday!Here's a picture of the food table. We did small appetizers and desserts. To go with the theme we made K cookies with green icing to match the color scheme, and ordered mini cupcakes with fondant Ks on them. The cupcakes turned out so cute! I wish I could make ones like that!!

This is a picture of the bar area with a banner strung across it spelling out Kristina. I printed the letters in circles on card stock and backed them in green and purple card stock that matched the invitations, then strung them on green ribbon. We served blueberry bellinis that matched the purple.
This is one of my favorite shower decorating ideas! The clothesline! You can string anything on a clothesline to match your theme, but for this occasion I choose an oven mitt set from Crate and Barrel and two monogrammed dishtowels. If you look closely you can see that two of the clothespins are birds. Aren't those so cute! My mom bought them from Crate and Barrel outlet!!! (They are now being used to dry my cloth diapers ;) )

Hope everyone enjoyed a little peek at the shower. I have so much fun organizing events like these. I have my Sister-in-Law's coming up in May... already planning!

Applique Dishtowels and Giveaway!!!

I thought I would start the week with a tutorial and a Giveaway!!! I hosted a shower for my cousin's fiance this weekend(more details tomorrow!) and made some appliqued dishtowels as the favors. I was super excited with how they turned out, and had a few left over! So, since I don't need 3 heart dishtowels, I though someone else out there might...heres the deal:

Now on to the tutorial:

Materials:

dishtowel

Lite Steam-A-Seam

fabric

coordinating thread

sewing machine

iron

1. Trace your design onto the paper side of the fusible web, in reverse. If you choose to do letters you can print them from your computer and then trace them (backwards) onto the paper side. (oops, my calendar snuck into the photo!)

2. Follow the directions on your fusible web. For mine I had to iron the fabric, take off the liner on one side (not the one that has your design on it), and stick it to the wrong side of your fabric.

3. Cut out your shape and peel the other liner off, being sure that the webbing sticks to the fabric.

4. Stick your applique onto the dishtowel in the position you want it.

5. Follow the directions on your package for how long to iron it in place.

6. Stitch 1/4" in around your shape.

7. Note: Your fabric will fray around the edges when washed, if you want to avoid this do a tight zig-zag stitch around the edges.

I haven't posted in awhile :(! Sorry. I've been busy with the kiddos, planning a bridal shower (details to come), and sewing!
I though I would show off a couple of my latest creations.

The top picture is Marley showing off her latest accessory, a ruffle beanie that mommy made from an old tee-shirt!

This picture features Marley and her fabric flower hair clip, made just like the previous one here, with a couple more embellishments. This time I used the hem of an old tee-shirt, attached the flower to a fabric lined alligator clip and stitched a yellow button in the center to match her outfit!

Sorry, not alot of tutorials, but a little inspiration for a cloudy, or snowy day!

Re-Purposed Fabric Flower Hair Clips

I am gearing up for an upcoming local farmer's market and have decided to place a big focus on creating items from re-purposed fabrics! There are so many great fabric out there, on old clothing and what not, that can be used to make cute "new" things! Plus, old fabrics have been washed so many times that most of the chemicals used in their fibers are gone! (yea organic!)
So here are a few fabric flower hair clips I made from an old shirt. I LOVE this fabric and am so excited it found new life in these clips.

I didn't capture the steps on camera, but I'll give you a summary of how to make your own clips!

1. Cut a strip of fabric, mine vary in width and length, think about how big you want your flower to be. 1" is a good place to start on width.

2. Stitch along one long side of the strip and gather (pulling your stitching).

3. Secure your gathered stitches. I just tie a knot using a previous stitch ( I don't know how to explain it better!! :) )

3. Now bunch together one side to form the center and stitch through it to secure it.

4. Start twisting the rest of your gathered strip around the center, stitching through every so often to secure.

There you go!!

I attached mine to snappi clips that are covered in matching fabric.

re-purposed owl pillow

Meet our newest family room friend!!! I am so excited about this finished project. I LOVE owls! I don't know why, but they have always seemed a bit whimsical to me. I was digging through a bag of old clothes the other day and found an old sweater and the owl was imagined! it didn't take long for me to gather a few old shirts for coordinating fabric. Literally all the fabric used is re-purposed!!!!!

I wanted to do a tutorial, but my camera battery was dead, and I have to use my time when I can get it, so he was created without pictures of the process, but it was really quite simple.

1. draw your pattern- I use fusible interfacing to draw my patterns on. I based this owl loosely off my hair clips that I make.

2. cut out the pattern and pin it to the sweater so it goes through both sides.

3. Cut out the owl from the sweater.

4. using coordinating knit fabrics (they won't fray) cut out the belly and eyes.

a. I used various household items to draw the eye circles (jars etc...) and the smallest circle i used the sweater material.

5. Cut out a triangle for the nose. This should be fairly large so the eyes can overlap it.

6. sew your belly onto the front of one of the sweater pieces. I used a tight zigzag stitch, but you could straight stitch around .

7. sew the nose on. I used a straight stitch. sew your eyes on going from largest to smallest using a straight stitch.

8. Pin your owl right sides together and stitch around the edges, leaving an opening for turning and stuffing.

9. Stuff with poly-fill and close with a hidden stitch.

You now have a new friend too!!!!

So Many Things I Want to Make!

I haven't had enough time to upload pictures of the fabulous hair bow holder I made for Ava Monday, needy baby and all, so I'm just going to write a little about all the AMAZING things there are to make out there. My head is swimming with projects to take on. I wish I could win a shopping spree to Jo-Ann's so I could buy all the materials I need, then a day garage sale shopping and a babysitter and I would be set!
So here's just the tip of the iceberg of things I want to create:
1. I am dying over these adorable Baby Shoes at Goosie Girl's. Marley still wears infant sized shoes and I would love to make a pair for every outfit! Ok, every outfit might be overdoing it, but a few pairs would be fun!

2. Infarrantly Creative has this great copy of an adorable Anthropologie necklace I have had my eye on. This is a must make!

3. Since pretty much everything in my life revolves around my kids, They are the target of most of my crafty projects so this one is for them. Obsessively Stitching made a wonderful ABC book I have been stalking recently. I will make one... one day!!

And the list goes on....

Feeling Fabulous!

Somewhat Simple, one of the blogs I follow, is doing this great Feeling Fabulous Challenge! I am so excited! It has totally inspired me to do things that I should already be doing, and just take a little more effort to do them! I was bummed I missed the first week, but I am on board for this week. The plus is, there's a prize. Motivation, motivation, motivation!! I also LOVE that one of the goals is getting dressed. Seriously, some days that is a real challenge! So day 1, today, I already drank more water, got dressed :), finished a project (and started another one), walked with the kids and a few more things! My most difficult challenge, no sweets or soda! I could not triumph over that one today, but maybe tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Mod Podge Nursery Letters

I've had this project in the finishing stages for about.. hmm... 8 months now! Poor Marley, her room has been a bit neglected since our move corresponded with her birth. This is a super easy way to decorate a nursery, or kids room, to your style cheaply!

You will need:

Cardboard letters- I got mine from Paper Source for about $4.00 a piece

Decorative paper- I also used paper from Paper Source as

well as recycled wrapping paper (yea re-purposing!)

Pencil

Scissors

Mod-Podge or PVC (Paper Source)

Sponge-tipped brush- I used a painting brush in these pictures because I can't find my sponge-tipped one (Moving!!). You can subb a painting brush, but the sponge-tipped ones are better!

Command Picture hanging strips

1. Lay your letter face-down on the wrong side of your decorative

paper and trace around trying to get as close to the letter as possible.

2. Cut out the letter.

3. Brush your cardboard letter with PVC.

4. place the paper letter on the cardboard letter and press down carefully, being sure to align your edges. I like to start at the top and move down making sure there are no bubbles or ripples in my paper.

5. This step is optional, but I think it looks better with it! Brush a layer of PVC on top of your finished paper. This seals the paper and gives is a glossy look. I brush a little around the edges to fill in any gaps too.

6. When you go to hang the letters attach a command strip to each letter and place it where you want it. These strips are great because you can adjust how the letter hangs, or even change the letters, and they remove from the walls without leaving any marks ( at least on my walls they did!)

Felt Playhouse Continued...

I promised more pictures and templates so here we go! As I mentioned earlier my original inspiration came from homemadebyjill. She did an adorable one for her son, and my mission began! I changed a few structural things, since my older daughter is 4, I needed to make one that was tall enough for her to stand up in, so I decided that I would have my husband build a PVC frame. The dimensions ended up being about 48" tall (on the short sides), front and back are 50" wide, and the sides are 36" wide. I got the felt at the Black Friday sale at Joann's, so it ended up costing about $35 for all the fabric, and I have lots left over for additional add-ons that I have planned!

back corner. The tree was inspired by the one on Jill's blog, but came out looking alot different.

This is the back side. I have alot more work to do here, but I have the "base" of a garden. The picture isn't that great, but on the bottom is about

a 4" tall strip of brown felt to act as the dirt. I sewed the bottom and sides, and then about every 3" sewed a pocket in. This way the girls can pull vegetables out of the ground! I have carrots there already (you can see the bright green sticking out) and have plans to make onions, and potatoes. The tall plants are a pea plant and a tomato plant (Ava's

favorite at Nana's house!), I still need to make t

he veggies to go on them!

She has this adorable cupcake bakery that I knew Ava would love! So, this side has a cabinet that she will be able to display her cupcakes in and a table that she can set up or decorate her cakes and cupcakes on. I haven't made the cupcakes, cakes or decorations yet, but they will have velcro on the back so that they stick to the felt, but are easily moved.

Last picture for today! This is an up-close of the front mailbox and house numbers. I used my girl's birthdays as the house address. I drew out the numbers and cut them then stitched down the center. The mailbox opens for letters... another yet to come item!

As I add items, as you can tell I have lots to add, I will post more pictures, templates and tutorials!

Looking back on 2009 I can't help but wonder what 2010 has in store for us! Last year we had a baby, bought a house, and I started my business. Who knows what this new year could hold!! I got a new sewing machine for Christmas (yea) so hopefully it hold lots of sewing and crafting in the coming months. As always, I try and make a few resolutions, here's my list for 2010:

1. Get my home in "maintenance mode" - we recently moved and I still am catching up... I need to be in a place where I feel like I can maintain with out always feeling 10 steps behind!

2. Read a book a month - This should be pretty easy considering we canceled cable :)

3. Exercise!!!!- My never ending and slow to conquer goal

Speaking of the read a book a month... I am currently reading Son of a Witch by Gregory Maguire, the author of Wicked, If you liked Wicked (the book) you will LOVE this one! I'm so captivated. I love his writing and I feel like Wicked just continued... not always the case with sequels. Check it out! My next title... Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver

Felt Playhouse!

I posted a couple of weeks ago about my new endeavor to create a felt playhouse for Ava and Marley for Christmas. I actually made it! It turned out to be a MUCH bigger project than I expected. Wow, we are talking 1 am on Christmas eve sewing on the roof! Although I am not completely finished, I got the "base" done! Jake built the frame out of PVC pipe (such a good daddy!) and I fitted the house around it (definitely the hardest part for me :) ) I'll post more pictures of the sides soon, and some links for templates if anyone wants to pursue this project. To be honest, most of it was free-handed. Once I had the idea of the house, I just kept getting new ides of things I wanted to add. As you can see here, the front has a door, a mailbox, which I will be making letters to put in, and a window with window box. The window box has pockets sewn into it so the girls can put flowers (adding more soon) into it. More to come soon, just wanted to give a peek!See more pictures Here!

Ava's Apron

So, for christmas I scored some adorable cupcake fabric and made her a retro style apron of her own! It turned out super cute! I was really excited.... and she LOVES it! So I saw this adorable felt play house at:homemade by jill: felt playhouse. And now I'm inspired! So heres my goal for the next few weeks... design and build a girl version! It will (if finished) be Ava and Marley's big Christmas gift. I've already planned to change a few things...

1. Since Ava is bigger (4) I plan of making it with its own frame, compliments of my handy husband and some PVC pipe.

2. It will have to have some girly additions, and be pink of course!

but, the garden is staying... I think that is my favourite part. Jill is so creative and I love her blog!!!

Holly's Angels Diaper

I have to share a picture of the diaper I made for our friends Ben and Holly. They are huge Angels fans and so we anted to give them a diaper their little girl could wear on game days. I was so excited with how this one turned out. I can't wait to make more custom diapers. Its so fun to see peoples "likes" reflected in their kids things!

Handmade All-in-One One Size Cloth Diapers!!!

I am so excited to share my diapers! I debuted my line at the Olivenhain Craft Fair last Saturday and am now open to orders!!! Alot of time and energy has cone in to creating these diapers and I am so happy with the final product! Please take a look and let me know what you think. I will be adding new prints in the next couple of days, including a dyable fabric that is super cute, so I can create custom colored diapers! Also check out my line of hair accessories. are all handmade and I have to stop myself and Ava from wanting to keep them all! My latest fav is this huge felt flower headband! Maybe I'll do a giveaway soon to any followers out there!

In the last few weeks I have been developing a line of hand made or "mamamade" items! I am so excited to be launching two new lines in the next couple of weeks, Green Bean Diapers and Nursing accessories and Little Bird Hair accessories! Both of these lines are designed and made by myself in my home. It has been my vision all along that I would combine my love for natural child raising and my enjoyment of crafty projects together to create my own cloth diapers. I am finally seeing this come to fruition and can't wait to share it with everyone! You will be hearing and seeing more about the diaper in the next couple week, but to give you all a little tidbit of what is to come. The diapers are designed by me, with all the things I personally was looking for in a cloth diaper. They are an All In One with a snap in soaker for quicker drying and easier clean up as baby gets older. All diaper have a hidden layer of PUL with a fashion print on the outside for ultimate cuteness! Check back in the next week for pictures and update on how the line is progressing. For locals, I will be debuting the lines at the Olivenhain Craft Fair in North County San Diego on November 14th. So stop by and see us!

It was so fun choosing the colors, and some of the new colors are really great! The Violet is very pretty, and Kelly Green is nice too. The Cow Print is still my favorite!
